If you try to not give yourself any sort of bonus via accessories, you can expect NeverAwake to be a very tough game.

And you can spend them on accessories, special weapons, or upgrades for both. You purchase everything from the shop with souls accrued through playing the levels. Rem has accessory slots available, and these can be expanded with purchases. The kicker is that as you die, more of these helpful accessories will appear. But you can equip shield rings that give you armor points.

By default, Rem takes one hit and that’s it. Instead of having difficulty levels to choose from or a menu with accessibility options, how hard everything is is governed by what accessories you equip. NeverAwake handles difficulty quite differently. The genre is known for being quite difficult, and NeverAwake is no exception - not technically, at least. It all amounts to a fairly honest and touching look at depression, social anxiety, isolation, and grief.ĭifficulty is often a sticking point for shmups. Unlocking a new level rewards you with a new diary entry that grants a bit more insight. They convey information about Rem’s life, as well as provide context toward why that certain thing is on her mind. The game has seven main worlds, each with its own theme. NeverAwake is set within the mind of a young girl named Rem as she lies in a hospital bed after falling into a coma for reasons not initially specified. But this is a unique, absorbing game for anyone who likes to weave away from bullets and obstacles while frantically firing.

Some of the levels fumble a bit when it comes to design, and I’m still not sure how to complete certain challenges. NeverAwake isn’t just a great shmup with a wondrous visual style, it’s also one of the beefiest shmups I’ve ever seen. Sure, people can dump time into them, but that’s usually due to how much practice they require along with the potential for chasing higher and higher scores.

It’s creative, beautiful, and has a satisfying gameplay loop worth diving into.Shoot ’em ups (or shmups) are not known for having many hours of content. NeverAwake is the best shoot ’em to hit the Switch since Andro Dunos 2 last year.

The leaderboards stand out here since resource management is an essential element of the game in addition to the typical journey full of great positioning and reflexes. The gameplay is consistent throughout and rewards players for memorizing the levels and enemy patterns. Of course, there are leaderboards for veterans of the genre that love to chase high scores. Not only does this customize the player to a preferred playstyle, but it also makes the game more accessible than most in the genre. There are items throughout the influence bullets, health, and even the health of the bosses. The difficulty scales quite a bit to how the player approaches the game. It’s genuinely a blast to play as a well-crafted love letter to the genre that subverts a few tropes. The controls feel excellent, and the level design has some of the best moments in recent history for the genre. Using the weapons is nothing short of fun, but there is enough depth to them to make strategy a thing worth considering. The weapon arsenal is varied and the animations are dazzling. Gameplay-wise, there isn’t too much unique about NeverAwake, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t fun.

Players will explore the nightmares of the protagonist throughout the game, and while this isn’t explicitly a horror game, it’s thematic and full of atmosphere. There are seven different worlds for players to explore, and each one is visually distinct. NeverAwake is an interesting spin on the genre because it is both beautiful and haunting. It’s happening again, this time with NeverAwake. Still, every now and again, a visually unique shooter hits the genre. There are the anime games that typically run vertically, and then there are the typical space shooters like R-Type or Andro Dunos. There are the cute ’em-ups like the Cotton franchise. There is no shortage of shoot ’em ups on the Switch, and most of them fit into one of three categories.
